Body Care - Teeth
Today we looked at the need to look after our teeth. We did an experiment where we used boiled eggs. We put each egg in a different solution - water, coca-cola, orange drink and white vinegar. We will look again tomorrow. We think that the eggs will get stained and the vinegar will make the egg shell soft.

RESPECT

We are continuing our work on respect this week with a look at bullying - What it is, what it looks like, feels like and sounds like, where it happens and how we can help. We watched a video on cyber bullying and we were very sad to see and unhappy to see how the victim felt. We decided as a pod to make sure we never bullied anyone and to look after and support everyone at Wanaka Primary School. We came up with lots of really good ways to get help for the victim and to support them. We talked a lot about what bullying really is because most of us didn't understand it very well.

First Day of Term 2011
Today was the first day back for all Wanaka Primary students. It was great to meet my new class. We had a brilliant day and I would like to thank all my wonderful kids for making my day a very special one. We are focusing on RESPECT for the first two weeks of the term and already the children are coming up with great ideas about this value. Here is a poem we shared today.
I RESPECT THE THINGS YOU SAY
I respect the things you say;
I respect what you think and do.
It doesn’t matter anyway
If I think differently from you.
You are a person just like me,
You are a person I accept.
Whatever feelings there may be,
We’ll treat each other with RESPECT!
HOW TO TREAT OTHERS WITH RESPECT
Treating people with respect makes your world a nicer place to live in, whether it's at home, at school, or out in your community. And it's easy - all you have to do is treat people the way you like to have them treat you.
Here are some of our ideas....
- Listen to others when they speak.
- Don't insult people or make fun of them.
- Value other people's opinions.
- Be considerate of people's likes and dislikes.
- Don't mock or tease people.
- Don't talk about people behind their backs.
- Be sensitive to other people's feelings.
- Don't pressure someone to do something he or she doesn't want to do.
- Show interest and appreciation for other people's cultures and backgrounds.
- Don't go along with prejudices and racist attitudes.
- Never stereotype people.
- Show interest and appreciation for other people's cultures and backgrounds.
- Don't go along with prejudices and racist attitudes.
- Try to learn something from the other person.
We live in a world made up of many different cultures, languages, races, and backgrounds. This kind of variety can make all our lives a lot more fun and interesting, but only if we get along with each other.
To do that we have to respect each other.

Food For Thought
Oppps!!!We forgot the camera today for the our supermarket visit. We worked in groups and we had questions to complete. We went to different aisles to measure two things in the shelves. For example biscuits and crackers, water and fizzy drink, bread and pikelets and vegetables and fruits. We had to draw a picture of a food that you have not seen or eaten before. George chose rhubarb. Sam liked the biscuit aisle because there was more work to do, like finding the fat, sugar and dietary fibre on the labels. Sam & George loved the visit and learnt lots about reading labels and nutrition.
Sam says...
"When we got back we played a game of hangman Mary made a word . We were hopeless at it at first but then we got on the roll . The word was carbohydrate. "
George says...
" I liked the fizzy drink aisle because it was a sweet type of aisle. we got put into different types of groups and we went to different topics at different times. We had a lot of fun at New World."
Thank you to Rebecca and New World.

Food For Thought

Welcome to Rebecca McNaughton
Rebecca is a nutritionist for Foodstuffs South Island. She is running a programme in the middle syndicate called 'Food For Thought'. We looked at healthy foods last term so this was a good chance to revise and refresh or thinking. Today she helped us understand the food groups and food labels in more depth. Reading labels is an important skill. Tomorrow we are off to the New World Supermarket to learn even more. We will have photos from our visit for you tomorrow.

Types of Disasters
Today we began our investigation into the different disasters we might experience in NZ.These are the disasters we came up with...
Floods
Earthquakes
Tsunami
Volcanoes
Storms
We then went to 'What's the Plan Stan?' CD
and found out there was one more called non- natural. We are going to investigate this further later in the week. We then looked in depth at tsunami and floods by looking at a fact sheet, photos and a video on each disaster. Then we completed a quiz. Our next task was to complete a table with the following headings.Disaster Type & Cause
Similarities
Differences
Floods
Floods are one of New Zealand's most frequent hazards. Flood waters can ravage the land, destroying roads, bridges, railway tracks and buildings. Crops can be inundated and livestock drowned. Human lives are also at risk, particularly in flash floods and tsunami, where fast-flowing water filled with debris can sweep people away.
Tsunami

New Zealand is a country surrounded by water, so many coastal communities are at risk from tsunami. In a near source tsunami the water level may fall very quickly past the normal low tide mark, then return just as quickly. If this happens, there won't be enough time to issue a warning and it is important that you know what to do, and that you act quickly.
Earthquakes
New Zealand experiences thousands of earthquakes every year. Most are either very deep or centred well offshore, causing little damage or injury. However, a severe earthquake can occur at any time with devastating effects.
We used a model Annie had completed on tsunami and discussed each heading. Then we completed our own for Floods. Tomorrow we will move onto Volcanoes and Storms.

Drop, Cover and Hold
We have been leasrning all about what to do in an earthquake. We have had practises in class and are very quick, quiet and calm. Here is what to do in an earthquake emergency. We made posters to put around the school

• Move no more than a few steps to a safe place, drop, cover, and hold on.
• Do not attempt to run outside
• If outside, move no more than a few steps to a safe place, drop, cover, and hold
• If in a lift, stop at the nearest floor and get out
• If you are driving, pull over to the side of the road. Stay in the vehicle until the shaking stops
• If you are near the coast, drop, cover and hold during an earthquake, and then move immediately to higher ground when the shaking stops.

Change, Loss & Grief
We have just completed a unit on Change, Loss and Grief. The children listened to stories and discussed ,described and shared how they felt and acted during a time of change, loss or grief. The children came up with lots of ideas about how they could help and support others going through a difficult time. They also responded empathetically to each other's stories. We also looked at community agencies and people who could help us at difficult times. The children completed comic strips to show how they could help others.
Criteria for our comic strips...
