Visual Language - Static Images

Today we developed the criteria for our Beijing posters. This is what we came up with. We will use this to plan, monitor and self assess our work. This afternoon we completed our draft poster, proof-read and edited it. We are now ready to publish. Look at this official Olympic
poster. What do you notice about the writing? Does this poster use any of the criteria we came up with?

Change, Loss & Grief

We have just completed a unit on Change, Loss and Grief. The children listened to stories and discussed ,described and shared how they felt and acted during a time of change, loss or grief. The children came up with lots of ideas about how they could help and support others going through a difficult time. They also responded empathetically to each other's stories. We also looked at community agencies and people who could help us at difficult times. The children completed comic strips to show how they could help others.
Criteria for our comic strips...
  • The story is told in 6 - 8 frames
  • Each frame tells a part of the story
  • Word and thinking bubbles are used to tell the message in dialogue
  • Dialogue is simple, including the basic elements of a story
  • Pictures support dialogue message, showing feelings and mood
  • Pictures are coloured and creative
  • Make your comic more interesting by adding sound effects words (onomatopoeia)
  • Make bubbles all shapes and sizes
  • Make sure the shape, size and colour of a word bubble can tell the audience
what the person is saying or thinking before he/she reads the words
  • WATCH OUT! Make sure the word bubble and the words inside the bubble send the same message

Welcome Back

Another term underway. It was disappointing and saddening to have a break in to Room 2 and 3 on Saturday. It makes you wonder what goes on in some people's head. Such a stupid thing to do and senseless damage. They squirted paint everywhere and stole a teacher's lap top. We are all feeling such a sense of intrusion into our wonderful learning environment. There will be no homefun this week so will start Monday of Week 2. If anyone would like to help in the classroom we would love to see you. Any day, Monday to Thursday in the 9.30 am to 10.30 am slot or from 11.00 am to 12.30 pm slot. Please let me know if you can help.

Technology - Making Chinese Lanterns

Today we made Chinese lanterns. These lanterns had a wire frame which was really hard to make. A big thank you to the parents who came along to help. Once the frame was made we taped the ends where the joins were. We then glued tissue paper or cellophane over the wire frame and added Chinese symbols and icons. We had set criteria to assess our lanterns against. Here is the criteria
1. Be hollow
2. Be covered in transparent or translucent material that does not melt
3. Be aesthetically pleasing and colourful
4. Reflect aspects of Chinese culture
5. Have a handle to hang it

Dara's Descriptive Writing

The frost lay on the ground glistening like the wild white tiger's fur. It was like polar bears marching through the snow. It was as cold as Mount Cook and as frosty as the ice that floats around Antarctica, like pools of frothy, glittering water. The frost shone so bright and then melted into a beautiul pool of water.

My special place is my room because I can play with my toys. It's fun reading in bed and playing with my art stuff. I can play with my sister, make homes for my little toys and look at my ornaments. My room is a place where I can go when I'm in a bad mood.
