Mathletics

Thanks to all those parents who turned up to learn about Mathletics tonight. We are lucky to have had Kiri at school to teach teachers and parents about the benefits of Mathletics. Click on the link to find out more. A note is going home on Thursday about it, so look out for it. At the bottom of the note your class teacher will record a log in name and password so they can access it for free for two weeks. The cost per child will be $22 for the rest of the year. This will allow your child to access the programme online 24/7. Pod 4 used this last year and there were huge benefits for the children in the pod in basic fact speed and recall, motivation and skill level. The children loved it because it is so interactive, challenging, rewarding and there are lots of incentives such as certificates, avatars etc. Wanaka Primary would like as many children as possible with a log in so they can use it at home and at school. It works out $2.20 per month ( half the price of a coffee!). You will not be disappointed. A second notice will go out next week so that you can purchase this lisence. Make sure you get this in by Tuesday 1 April as this will be the cut off date. Take advantage of this lower price as it is usually $99!

Eye Colour Pictograph Findings

Thirteen children have blue eyes, 7 have  brown and 2 have green eyes.

Twenty two children were surveyed.

There were no grey eyes in Room 16.

The difference between the least and the most was eleven.

Over half the class has blue eyes!

Statistics - Graphs

Today we learnt about tally charts and pictographs.  We surveyed ten class members and asked them this question...
What colour eyes do you have?
We recorded our data on a tally chart.
We also wrote a title for our pictographs.
Tally Charts
Tally charts help us collect and organise data. The data in a tally chart should be clear and displayed in easy-to-count groups of five.

Pictographs

Pictographs use pictures to represent data, making it easy to compare data visually. To read a pictograph, you start by looking at the key to see how many of a given item each picture stands for. Over the next weeks we will use a key with a scale of one, two, or five, meaning each picture represents one, two, or five of that item.

Pie Graphs

Today we learned to do pie graphs. We used a programme called Create A Graph to make our graph. We ddi a class tally chart of Room 16s favourite colours.

Measurement

Last Friday we baked in class to practise our measuring skills. mostly we weighed in grams using scales. We made Lolly Cake and Chocolate Bubble Cakes. We shared them with the other two classes in our Pod.

Models Made from Straws

Octagons used an assessment activity from the level 3 Assessment Resource Bank. We use these tasks regularly for learning activities and assessment tasks. This group did very well. I'm proud of you all!

Making 3D Models

We made 3 D models from winegums ans toothpicks. It was fun exploring the faces, edges and corners. And it was yummy too! We had to wait till Friday to eat them or take them home because Annie wanted photos of them.

Today Stars mad theri drink combos. They had to use 5 or more dinks .

Making Chocolate Bubble Cakes

Today the Arrow's maths group made Chocolate Bubble Cakes. We had a Master Chef bake off competition (boys against girls). We even had judges. Paddy and Kerry judged the crackles and the girls won! But we had to also take into account the tidiness of the groups while they were cooking and the boys won that. We decided it had to be a draw! They were certainly very yummy! The teachers enjoyed theirs as well.
Here is the recipe:

Chocolate Bubble Cakes

250 g vegetable shortening
100 g icing sugar
25 grams cocoa
100 grams rice bubbles
100 grams coconut

1. Put vegetable shortening in a saucepan.
2. Cook over a low heat until melted.
3. Sift icing sugar and cocoa together.
4. Add sifted ingredients, rice bubbles and coconut to saucepan, stirring until well combined.
5. Spoon mixture evenly into paper patty cases.
6. Chill until firm.

Measurement - Mass

Today the Smiley Faces math's group made Lolly Cake. They looked at the weights on the packets and measured out the correct amounts. It was a yummy lesson!

Lolly Cake
Ingredients:
120 g butter
250 g malt biscuit crumbs
180 g fruit puffs
1/2 tin condensed milk
coconut – for coating
Method:
1. Warm butter and condensed milk together in the microwave.
2. Add biscuit crumbs and fruit puffs.
3. Stir well.
4. Roll into one log or small balls. Coat in coconut.
